A Study on the Mobilization of Ascorbic Acid in Rat Blood and Liver by Fasting

Abstract
Adult male albino rats of a pure strain were used as experimental animals. The contents of ascorbic acid in blood and liver were examined in relation with starvation. The ascorbic acid was measured by a modified 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazin method
the results obtained are summerized as follows.
1. During 24 hours starvation, the total ascorbic acid in liver did not parallel with a derease of protein in liver, but thereafter till 192 hours of starvation, the total ascorbic acid in liver paralleled with a decrease of protein in liver.
2. The blood ascorbic acid decreased slightly during first 24 hours of starvation and increased slightly during 48 hours of starvation, and thereafter decreased ti11¢¥192 hours of starvation, especially the loss of blood dehydro ascorbic acid was 100% after 192 hours of starvation. However, the total¢¥ ascorbic acid was almostly within normal limits until 192.hours of starvation.
3. The decreasing degrees of dehydroascorbic acid in blood and liver were more pronounced than that of total ascorbic acid in blood and liver.
